Yesterday, a Florida megachurch pastor was arrested for defying a stay-at-home order in his state and holding services for hundreds of congregants.
Today, an associate of this same pastor is talking about holding a massive event in defiance of stay-at-home orders.
Outlets like The Atlantic are already lamenting the politicization of the pandemic, and “respectable” evangelicals like Michael Gerson are taking people like Jerry Falwell, Jr to task for re-opening Liberty.
But how can these leaders be reined in that will:
not feed their persecution complex, or more importantly,
limit their ability to expose vulnerable populations to potential infection?
This is a tough one because evangelicals are genius at the persecution narrative. My hope is that it’s one instance where public opinion will be overwhelmingly against them.
Validate his self worth. Make it clear how valuable the impact of the socially responsible ministries his church has done is to the community.
Highlight the ways in which his desire to hold services is persuant of good ends by bad means.
